AION
2006, installation
AION (Ancient Greek αιων = “infinity”, “eternity”, a time span beyond human understanding) is a portrait of four abandoned spaces inside the so-called “Zone of Alienation” in Chernobyl, Ukraine; a dripping swimming pool, a ruined concert hall, a mould-infested gymnasium and an old village church. In each space, the artist put up a microphone and a speaker, started the recording and left. After ten minutes, he returned, stopped the recording and played it back in the same space. With each new layer, the subtle sounds of the room were enlarged and deepened until they finally turned into one humming sound with many overtones – the voice of the room itself.

AION (sengrieķu val. αιων = “bezgalība”, “mūžība”, laika posms ārpus cilvēka sapratnes) ir video mākslas darbs, kas attaino četru pamestu vietu vizuālo un audio portretu Čornobiļas AES atsvešināšanās zonā Ukrainā; pilošs baseins, izpostīta koncertzāle, sapelējusi sporta zāle un veca ciema baznīca. Katrā vietā mākslinieks atstāja mikrofonu un skaļruni, uzsāka ierakstīšanu un aizgāja prom. Atgriezies pēc 10 minūtēm, viņš pārtrauca ierakstīšanu un atskaņoja iegūto ierakstu. Ar katru jaunu atskaņošanas reizi, klusās telpas skaņas kļuva skaļākas un dziļākas, iegūstot viendabīgu, zumošanu skaņu – pamesto vietu balsi.
